College Students AKA Insomniacs

During college, students are figuring out how to manage their time properly and get their school assignments completed. If that means staying up until 4 o'clock in the morning, then so be it. That is how students are thinking these days, and that is the completely wrong way to manage your time.

Sleep is one of the most important things the human body needs. SUNY Geneseo posted a great digital article that discusses how college students can make the most of the sleep they do get. Students think getting 12 hours of sleep a day on the weekends will make up for the late night study jams during the week. This is false. According to this article, by SUNY Geneseo, irregular sleep patterns throughout the week can screw with your sleep cycle and actually make it more difficult to fall asleep.

Some things you can do to take get the sleep you need include the following:

1. Drink less alcohol. Yeah, it may make you pass out faster, but you will feel like crap in the morning. Your body will be restless during the night and you will not feel refreshed in the morning.

2. Smoke less cigarettes. Nicotine can make you feel agitated and restless. It does not contribute to a good nights rest.

3. Exercise regularly. You will experience a deeper sleep.

4. Stop drinking so much coffee. Your mind tricks you into thinking you need coffee to keep going. What you actually need is some water and sleep. Coffee is a short-term mindset, think long-term and start taking care of your body.

5. Make goals everyday and get them done. The feeling of accomplishment is immeasurable. If you do not believe me, give it a try. Start setting little goals everyday and see how great it feels to get them done.

6. Maintain a regular sleep cycle. Okay, you do not need to have a set bed time, however, its smart to make sure to at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

7. Practice deep breathing. Clear your mind and focus on your breathing. Practicing mediation can relax the mind and body, which helps to establish regular sleep cycles.
